Epidemic Intelligence: Satellite-Enabled Applications for Health Early Warning Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
The SAFE (Satellites For Epidemiology) project is co-funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and coordinated by MEDES (FRANCE). In a twoday earthquake readiness exercise that was held on the island of Crete, Greece, on November 5-6, 2007, it demonstrated a component-based system for health early warning. The exercise that was coordinated by the Prefecture of Heraklion and FORTH-ICS, involved around 300 people from more than twenty organizations. Observers from ESA, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) and other organizations assessed the added value of satelliteenabled services not only in the acute phase following the disaster but also in post-disaster health management and epidemiological surveillance.

Early warning systems are key components of strategies to reduce risk. This research, by adopting a systematic approach in the management of the risk of desertification and by including previously developed models and systems, offers an integrated efficient structure in terms of early warning for the risk of desertification as a pilot system for semi-arid areas of west Golestan Province in IRAN...

Tracking Twitter for public health has shown great potential. However, most recent work has been focused on correlating Twitter messages to influenza rates, a disease that exhibits a marked seasonal pattern. In the presence of sudden outbreaks, how can social media streams be used to strengthen surveillance capacity? In May 2011, Germany reported an outbreak of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia col...
